It is very interesting that here in America, while you're picking up a phone number, remeber NOT TO PICK UP A GHETTO NUMBER.
Since I'm from Taiwan, we also pick up phone numbers while we're in the telecom company. We don't like the number like "4" (becuase it sounds like "death" in Chinese.) We would prefer numbers like ''9'' or ''8'' at the end. There're even some websites tell your whether you numbers are lucky phone numbers or evil numbers. My family memebers once in a time used to change their numbers to "lucky numbers" (including mine). Most of the telecom companies also have auctions for super lucky numbers like "0988-888-888". (8 means fortune and prosperity)
While I got my iPhone 3G as my Xmas present, the number I got was 404-xxx-xxx. According to my friends, they said it's a "GHETTO" number. All the ghetto numbers here in Atlanta start "404". Damn! So, I went back to AT&T, paid 39 USD, changed to a "770" also refers to a "I'm not living in the ghetto area" number. Now, I'm happy with my new number and of course, my iPhone!! :D
So, in Taiwan, we pick up a phone number for fortune and luck (alright, more like a money thing). Here in America, it's more like a racial thing to pick up a "good" number for yourself.
